Wearing velvet this party season

There seems to be a lot of velvet around this season – which is just what you need for a touch of luxe when the weather is starting to get cold (and apparently from tomorrow it’s going to be seriously cold!)

So here’s a jacket I’m really coveting right now – it’s a purple velvet jacket by Versus. I love the military detailing and I’ve always been a sucker for a tailored military jacket. The black satin on the lapels and zips on the sleeves just give it enough of an edge to stop you looking like you’re wearing a smoking jacket!

I thought I’d try this with plum coloured trousers, these ones are by Pucci. I’m wondering though whether they might be a bit too much in real life – I might go for jeans or leather trousers to tone the whole thing down a bit, otherwise I could end up looking a bit like that fox from the Foxy bingo adverts!

So with the addition of a statement crystal necklace from Fiorelli, I think I’m pretty much sorted for the party season. The only snag is that velvet is fine for outside, but like leather, it all get a bit hot once you’re inside a warm house (or restaurant, or bar!).

Soulful driftwood elephant art

South African artist Andries Botha’s elephant sculptures are made from driftwood over a metal skeleton. He calls his installation ‘You Can Buy My Heart and My Soul‘. This is what he had to say about his elephants:

In African mythology, the elephant reincarnates carrying the soul of a murdered God. It is thus the embodiment of the transmigration of souls. It is also the metaphor for the world’s preoccupation with Africa as an exotic location. The elephant thus embodies the world’s romanticism with Africa. In part, it is the Colonial panacea: wildness can be contained, civilised and taken back to the ballrooms of the First World as a trophy.

Art: cable-tie cherry trees

As a tribute to the cherry trees that were given to Washington D.C. by the Japanese government in 1912, Tom Price created this beautiful installation in the city’s Industry Gallery from polypropylene pipes and nylon cable ties.

In the man’s own words: “The blossoms are made from small chopped sections of pipe that are arranged on a large hot plate and melted together on one side so that they form into a sheet.
